The 2nd Annual Undergraduate Conference on Philosophy of Law and Social Justice is this Friday, May 2nd!

The UTRGV Philosophy Department's Pre-Law Concentration would like to invite each of you to our 2nd Annual Undergraduate Conference on Philosophy of Law and Social Justice this Friday, May 2nd, in BMAIN 1.224, from 9 AM to 4:45 PM.

The conference will feature papers from our own students, a panel on our immigration internship on child advocacy with our community partners (the Young Center and Good Neighbor), a graduation celebration, and a keynote from philosopher Andrés Molina-Ochoa from STC. Coffee and bagels will be provided in the AM, and a box lunch will be provided before the afternoon session. The Zoom link is below, but we'd love to see you in person if possible. Please join us!

UTRGV Philosophy faculty Drs. Ian Werkheiser, Alex Stehn, Stephen Leach, Jeff Morrisey, and Mike Butler (U. of North Dakota) recently won a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant for $149,923! Their project is titled, Philosophy as a Way of Life: A Humanities Approach to Becoming a “Good” Engineer. Congratulations to all!

The Philosophy Pre-Law Concentration Team is thrilled to announce the call for papers for our first Undergraduate Conference on Philosophy of Law and Social Justice.

Attached is the CFP and more information on the Undergraduate Conference. We welcome submissions of papers written by students majoring or minoring in Philosophy, Political Science, Legal Studies, Criminal Justice, History, Sociology, Environmental Studies, Gender and Women Studies, Mexican American Studies, and any other areas related to Philosophy of Law and Social Justice, broadly speaking.

The Potempa Prize will be awarded to the best student paper. This prize is named after Dr. Angelika Potempa, our esteemed retired colleague.

The Philosophical Dialogue Group is a student-led and student-run weekly discussion group for students (not just philosophy majors and minors) that meets every Monday at 5 p.m. in ELABN 115. Dialogues are based on a reading in the history of philosophy (typically from existential, ancient, or decolonial philosophy) and introduced by a student. Leach, Stehn, Butler, and Warfield win Mellon Foundation grant from the University of Notre Dame to redesign philosophy course

Four faculty members--Drs. Stephen Leach, Alex Stehn, Michael Butler, and Brad Warfield--have won a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the University of Notre Dame to redesign PHIL 1310: Ethics, Happiness, and the Good Life. The grant funds the implementation of student peer-led dialogue into the course.

Congratulations to Drs. Mariana Alessandri and Alex Stehn for winning the Inter-American Philosophy Award at this year's meeting of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy, which met in San Miguel de Allende! Their co-written paper was titled "La Mexicana en la Chicana: The Mexican Sources of Anzaldúa's Inter-American Philosophy."

"The Committee on Inter-American Relations will present the Inter-American Philosophy Award to the best submitted paper concerning Latin American, Latino/a, or indigenous philosophies across the Americas that is presented at the Annual Meeting. The Award includes a cash prize, and the winning paper will be published in The Inter-American Journal of Philosophy."
